Recently, my partner and I had the pleasure of visiting the floating canals in Muyil, and I must say it was a truly awe-inspiring adventure. From the moment we set foot in the biosphere, we were struck by the serene beauty of the natural landscape surrounding us. The pristine canals are a remarkable network of turquoise-blue waterways that snake their way through the dense jungle, teeming with wildlife and exotic plant life.
Our guided tour embarked from the Muyil Eco-Lodge, where we met our knowledgeable and experienced guide. We were provided with our kayaks and set off on our adventure downstream, exploring the canals as we went. The water was crystal clear, allowing us to spot an abundance of fish, turtles, and other aquatic creatures cruising beneath the surface.
As we paddled further down the canals, we encountered a variety of intriguing sights that further enhanced our experience. We came across an ancient Mayan trading route involving a wooden boardwalk spanning over the canals, known as the Sacbe. Our guide explained how this route had been used for trade, communication, and worship to ancient Mayan civilizations.
The mangroves surrounding the canals were also an interesting and immersive part of the tour. We saw mangroves in their various stages of growth and learned about how they function as guardians of the waterways and ecosystem.
